The Coalition for Senior Medication Safety was awarded a 5-year Prevention Framework Coalitions Initiative grant from the Dept. of Mental Health & Addiction Services (DMHAS). The project works with selected senior centers and senior housing buildings to address medication management issues in New Haven and West Haven. The Coalition is co-chaired by Donna B. Fedus, M.A., Gerontologist & Director, Elder Programs at The Consultation Center, and Sean Jeffery, PharmD, CGP, FASCP, FNAP, Clinical Professor, UConn School of Pharmacy.

Jacob Kraemer Tebes, PhD, professor of psychiatry (psychology), in the Child Study Center, and of public health, has received the 2015 Award for Distinguished Contribution to Theory and Research in Community Psychology. Initiated in 1974, the award is given by Division 27 of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA): Division of Community Psychology, to an individual whose career of high quality and innovative research and scholarship has resulted in a significant contribution to the body of knowledge in community psychology. The award will be presented to Tebes in June 2015 at the 15th SCRA Biennial Conference. From the award citation: "Well known for his work on the promotion of resilience in at risk populations, the prevention of substance abuse in adolescents, and the integration of cultural approaches in research and application, Jacob Kraemer Tebes, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychiatry (Psychology), in the Child Study and of Public Health, at the Yale University School of Medicine. He also is Director of the Division of Prevention and Community Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Executive Director of The Consultation Center. Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Community Psychology, he has encouraged innovative approaches to research within the discipline. He has also written on the relational and transdisciplinary nature of modern science, and the impact of philosophy of science on community psychology research. He has taught in community and clinical psychology and in prevention science, and has helped nurture a generation of scholars and practitioners." SCRA encourages the development of theory, research, and practice relevant to the reciprocal relationships between individuals and the social system and serves many different disciplines that focus on community research and action. Its members are committed to promoting health and empowerment and to preventing problems in communities, groups, and individuals.

"As a summer of service nears ... a look back" by Joanna Smiley, The Consultation Center at Yale
Even as the winter finally begins to melt away, summer is very much on the minds of those who have applied for 2015 Yale President’s Public Service Fellowships. Based on their talents and interests, the successful candidates are now being matched with 50 non-profit and public-sector agencies, where they will work for eight weeks on a variety of initiatives. One of those agencies, Yale’s Consultation Center (TCC), welcomed its first fellow last summer: Chelsea Hinchey, a graduate student in her final year of study at the Yale School of Nursing. A community based, multidisciplinary organization, TCC promotes health, wellness, and social justice throughout New Haven as well as the state and national levels. The non-profit center, which is affiliated with the Division of Prevention & Community Research in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, conducts research and evaluation, promotes youth, adult and community development, and manages community training programs for staff across Connecticut. Here TCC communication specialist Joanna Smiley talks with Hinchey about her partnership with the center as a President’s Public Service Fellow. What happens when you team a research-based center affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine with a vibrant network of organizations serving New Haven’s youth? The result is an experienced and dedicated training center that empowers youth organizations in New Haven and statewide. Known as the Youth Development Training and Resource Center (YDTRC), this capacity-building initiative started in 1994 as a collaboration between Citywide Youth Coalition and The Consultation Center.
