Wednesday, April 22 2009, 1:00pm - 4:15pm

The Keys to Working with Older Drivers

Driving may be one of the biggest hot-button issues faced by families with aging relatives.
Emotionally-charged conversations, ultimatums, and feelings of worry and helplessness are often the
norm. Get the facts about how normal age-related changes and diseases like dementia impact
driving. Learn how to support families through conversations about driving, including signs that
driving is becoming problematic, deciding who is best to talk with the elder, structuring the
conversation, conversation starters, and developing several options that can work for both
generations.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand normal age-related physiologic changes that impact driving.
2. Discuss how dementia impacts driving.
3. Consider the emotional context in which driving decisions are made.
4. Explore ways to help families come to resolution about driving issues.
